An island kitchen is a layout that takes the work surface and storage away from the wall and brings them into the middle of the kitchen. When the kitchen and the living room share one volume, the island also sets the boundary between the two areas. The first question when planning an island is what the surface will be used for: preparation, dining or conversation with guests. If a seating area is added, one side of the island should stay open for chairs, and the side meant for storage should be backed by cabinets.

An island works in plans wide enough to leave comfortable circulation space around it. If the kitchen opens onto the living room, the island acting as a boundary between the two areas is also an advantage. Whether it suits your space has to be decided together with the dimensions of the plan.
